My Mom the Great Educator – I Appreciate Her: Teaching Preschool
I remember my mom reading to me when I was a small child. I watched as she showed me words she read. “Can you say that?” she asked. My mom made reading an adventure.
My Mom the Great Educator – I Appreciate Her: Teaching Kindergarten
“A is for Apple,” Mom said many times. I listened intently then pointed at the letter and repeated the rhyme. Time and again my mom listened to me as I sounded out letters and simple words. By the […]

Being Big in a Little World means maintaining a great attitude and sense of humor even in the face of rude people.
Being Big: You’re in Good Company
Are you a big person? I’m not talking to the person who wants to lose five or ten pounds of vanity fat to squeeze into some tight fitting swimsuit. I’m talking to the person who goes for a checkup and spies the doctor writing “Morbidly Obese,” (I hate those words), on his chart. Now that’s a big person. Join the club. You’re in good company.

Big is Beautiful: A Short Story
I’ve always been chunky. (Some people might say fat, but it’s my story, and I can tell it any way I want.) Anyway, when I was twelve years old I was swimming with some of my friends at a local lake.
Some sixteen year old boys swam past us, […]

His Fireplace – Poem to Warm the Heart

His Fireplace – Poem to Warm the Heart
His Fireplace – Poem to Warm the Heart
Nothing close to rich man’s mansion
Lives a man in simple fashion.
His fireplace doesn’t have a mantle,
It just consists of three small candles.
He doesn’t have a blazing hearth,
But understands what warms the heart.
He cherishes her; who shares his life,
His lifelong mate; his loving wife.

Wash Day Blues – A Humorous Short Story: Introducing Joe Bob Bass
This story introduces a character by the name of Joe Bob Bass. Joe Bob is a driller on an oil drilling rig that works the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles.
I worked the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles for fifteen years. Many of the Joe Bob Bass stories came from that experience. I hope you enjoy his story titled “Wash Day Blues.”
By the way, do you know the difference between a fairy tale and an oil field story? A […]

Fond Memories – Washing Clothes with My Mom: Occur at Unexpected  Times
I was raised in a family of fourteen people in a home with only one bathroom.  Needless to say, scheduling bath time in my home was more than a simple task.  When I was seven years old I learned the only way to get sufficient bath time was to wake before my siblings.  My mother gave me an old wind-up clock so I could wake-up early.
The first morning I used the alarm I woke at five-thirty, traipsed downstairs as quietly as […]

Little Angels – Bare Knuckle Boxing Extravaganza

– Little angels…you bet.  What could cause a mother to spank her eleven angels? –

“Okay, everybody line up.” commanded Mom.
We had crossed the line; the paddlings were “fixin” to begin. Mom held the ruler in her hand. (She had learned that spanking eleven little angels with her hand was more painful to her than to us.) She was seven months pregnant with her twelfth child and was in no mood for games.
Mom didn’t use platitudes like, “This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you.” Instead, she’d say, “This is going to hurt. Maybe you’ll learn something.” We […]
